How to Prepare for Your Engagement Session

Planning your engagement session is one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning. It’s a chance to slow down, celebrate this season together, and create photos you’ll look back on for decades.
If you’re wondering how to prepare for your engagement session, don’t worry—I’ve got you covered. These are the same tips I share with every couple before we step in front of the camera.
1. Choose Outfits You Feel Like Yourself In
The best photos happen when you’re comfortable and confident.
Choose outfits that fit well, complement each other, and feel true to your style. You don’t need to buy an entirely new wardrobe—often your favorite outfit is the best choice.

2. Get Plenty of Rest the Night Before
It sounds simple, but it makes a difference.
A good night’s sleep helps you feel energized, relaxed, and ready to enjoy the experience. The camera picks up genuine emotion, and you’ll feel your best when you’re well rested.
3. Make a Date Out of It
One of my favorite pieces of advice is to avoid treating your engagement session like another item on your wedding checklist.
Plan dinner afterward. Grab coffee beforehand. Spend the evening together.
When you’re already enjoying each other’s company, it shows in your photos.
4. Clean Your Ring
Your engagement ring will almost certainly have its own close-up photos.
Take a few minutes to clean it beforehand—or have it professionally cleaned if you’re able. It’s a small detail that makes a noticeable difference.
5. Arrive a Little Early
Rushing into your session can leave you feeling stressed.
Give yourselves a little extra time to park, walk to the location, and settle in before we begin.
6. Trust Your Photographer
One of the biggest concerns couples have is:
“We’re awkward in front of the camera.”
I hear this all the time.
The truth is, almost every couple says it.
You don’t need to know how to pose or worry about what to do with your hands. I’ll guide you throughout the session so everything feels natural and relaxed.
7. Don’t Stress About the Weather
Weather can be unpredictable, especially in Virginia.
Cloudy skies often create beautiful, soft light, and if the forecast isn’t cooperating, we’ll talk through the best option together. Sometimes we reschedule. Sometimes we embrace the weather. Either way, we’ll make sure you end up with images you love.
8. Leave the Wedding Planning at Home
For one evening, try not to think about seating charts, timelines, or vendor emails.
This session is about the two of you.
Laugh, talk, walk hand in hand, and enjoy being together. Those genuine moments are always my favorites.
9. Bring a Few Small Essentials
A few things can make the session even smoother:
- Water
- Comfortable shoes for walking between locations
- Lip balm or lipstick for touch-ups
- A small brush or comb
- Any sentimental items you’d like to include
10. Remember Why You’re Here
The goal isn’t perfect poses.
The goal is to celebrate one of the most exciting seasons of your life together.
Some of my favorite photos happen between poses—when you’re laughing at an inside joke, fixing each other’s hair, or simply walking together. Those are the moments that tell your story.
Final Thoughts
Preparing for your engagement session doesn’t have to be complicated.
Wear something you love, arrive relaxed, trust the process, and focus on enjoying time together. I’ll take care of the rest.
If you’re planning an engagement session in Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, or the Fredericksburg area, I’d love to help create photos that feel natural, timeless, and true to you.
